Australian Ambassador To The Philippines: "Rape and murder should never be joked about or trivialized."

Amanda Gorely, the Australian Ambassador to the Philippines has released a short statement following the controversial "rape joke" by presidential candidate and Davao City mayor Rodrigo Duterte. The Ambassador's statement was posted on her Twitter account as well as on the official Facebook page of the Australian Embassy in the Philippines.

Gorely wrote: "Rape and murder should never be joked about or trivialized. Violence against women and girls is unacceptable anytime, anywhere."

The woman that Duterte described in his joke was an Australian woman named Jacqueline Hamill. The thirty-six year old missionary was one of five missionaries who were killed during a prison riot and hostage-taking crisis that occurred at a Davao City jail in 1989. Duterte was the mayor of the city during that time.
